"Men of culture are the true apostles of equality"
Matthew Arnold 1822 - 1888

Selling ourselves by investing our cultural capital in every aspect of life.

• Home to authors and writers throughout history.

• Provided inspiration for our greatest poets from Charles Lamb to John Keats.

• Some of the greatest names in English literature both visited and stayed in Hastings, amongst them Thomas Carlyle, Charles Dickens, Lewis Carroll. Many others like Rudyard Kipling and Henry James produced some of their best works in the beautiful towns and villages of 1066 country.

• The home to many great painters, not least the Pre-Raphaelites. Art flourishes in 1066 country, it continues to transcend time, with an abundance of galleries displaying the works of our brilliant and diverse group of young artists who have chosen to live and work in this beautiful part of the world.

• Music and musical entertainment in all of its many forms has been part of 1066 country throughout the ages. The magnificent De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill and the White Rock Theatre in Hastings together with many other venues scattered across the region have played hosts to the world’s most renowned artistes from Dame Clara Butt to the Rolling Stones. Music is not a thing of the past; it is alive and well and is performed regularly in pubs, clubs and theatres of our towns and villages by a seemingly endless array of talented performers.
• The area abounds with ancient potteries, Silverhill and Brede were notable in the production of Sussex Pottery. This traditional craft still flourishes in 1066 country with working potteries in Rye and Hastings and several other rural locations.

• High quality restaurants and pubs providing for the most discerning are in profusion, whilst we are blessed with excellent theatres including the now famous Stables in Hastings Old Town.
