"There is a history in all men's lives"
Shakespeare Henry IV part 2

• Cretaceous Period
Our first inhabitants, the dinosaurs, appeared around 140 million years ago, leaving us a footprint here at Fairlight.

• Mesolithic Period
The first evidence of man in Hastings occurred around 5000 years BC.

• Bronze Age
Evidence uncovered at Marina supports man’s continuing occupation of the area.

• Iron Age
Gold coin of Commius found in Hastings indicating the presence of British Tribes around 50 BC.

• Roman Period
Iron workings and a bath house at Beauport support the presence of Roman occupation.

• Saxon and Jutish Period
From the early 5th century onwards the Saxons and Jutes arrived and it is likely that one such tribe the Hastingas provided Hastings with its name.

• Danish Incursions
During the 10th and 11th centuries, Hastings which by 928 was a Saxon Burgh possessing its own mint, was ravaged by the Danes.

Norman Conquest
Occurring in 1066 and changing the course of English History

• Cinque Ports
Hastings obtained many privileges by being part of this confederation. There is no record of the formation of the Cinque Ports and it is not until 1155 that documentary evidence first exists.

• So progressed the development of the United Kingdom and the town of Hastings with their histories inextricably interwoven, both on land and on sea. The town of Hastings that you see today is the product of this long and tortuous journey through the passage of time.
